Our Programmes
Primary School Recorder and Wind Band Programme
Experience a musical journey with our Primary School Recorder and Concert Band Programme, designed to provide a comprehensive music education for younger students. Currently running at Floreat Primary School and extending soon to Steenberg Primary School in May 2024, this programme offers:
- Introduction to Music and Basic Theory: Grade 4 to Grade 7 students participate in music lessons, focusing on music history, local culture, and artistic appreciation. Basic theory is integrated into weekly lessons to help students understand music terminology and prepare for formal theory at high school.
- Practical Music Tuition: Grade 3 students at Floreat Primary School engage in a weekly recorder programme, nurturing their passion for playing the recorder. Grades 4 to 7 students at Floreat Primary participate in an ensemble lesson, where they receive practical ensemble performances using trombones and trumpets.

Renowned trumpeter, Prof. Dan Newell, brings his expertise to our primary school project in August/September 2023 – A true honour to have him in our midst in Steenberg.
On September 30, 2023, Musiquelaine SA recently showcased their exceptional talent at the prestigious Stellenbosch University National Ensemble Competition, where they claimed the well-deserved title of runner-up in the jazz ensemble category.
On August 31, 2023, Musiquelaine SA made its highly anticipated debate in a captivating public performance that also served as a successful fundraiser. The event not only showcased the immense talent of the ensemble but also garnered support from the community, contributing to their continued growth and success.
Musiquelaine SA had the incredible opportunity to participate in the highly anticipated Artscape School’s Arts Festival on August 16, 2023. This prestigious event provided learners with a professional stage to showcase their exceptional talent and passion for the performing arts.
High School Wind Band and Jazz Big Band Programme
Explore the world of music with Musiquelaine SA’s High School Music Programme, currently thriving at Steenberg High School. As a pioneer in musical education, we are in discussions to extend this enriching programme to another school in 2025.

- Concert Band Exploration: Discover the beauty of wind instruments with our Concert Band. - Big Band Experience: Immerse yourself in the rich and vibrant rhythms of jazz with our Big Band. Students hone their musical talents in the dynamic world of jazz music, engaging in captivating performances and creative expression. This ensemble fosters artistic growth and musical exploration.
Musiquelaine SA had the incredible honour of being invited to perform at the highly anticipated 2023 Remarkable Fest: Arise. This empowering event brought woman together at the iconic Six Gin Grill Newlands Stadium to celebrate Woman’s Day on August 19, 2023. The ensemble’s captivating performance left the audience in awe, showcasing their exceptional talent and leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
C-Flat Youth Jazz Festival
Enriching the lives of young musicians from underprivileged communities in Steenberg, Retreat, Seawinds, Lavender Hill, Capricorn Park, and surrounding areas through the annual C-Flat Jazz Festival. This transformative event, scheduled to take place in March each year, showcases our students alongside renowned South African music stars, providing them with exposure, experience, and inspiration. By inviting distinguished jazz artists to collaborate with our students, we create a platform for exceptional learning and growth, empowering our students to become role models and inspire their communities towards positive opportunities in music, arts, and creativity.
Highlighting the remarkable success of the 3rd Edition of the C-Flat Youth Jazz Festival, held on Human Rights Day, 21 March 2024. Themed ‘Celebrating Unity Through Jazz,’ this momentous event marked our 10th anniversary and coincided with South Africa’s 30 years of democracy.
The festival, held on a historic day dedicated to unity, human rights, and democracy, embodied the spirit of resilience, diversity, and progress that defines our nation. The power of music to unite, inspire, and uplift resonated throughout the evening, symbolising our collective journey towards a brighter and more inclusive future for all.
International Collaborations
At MSA, our commitment to fostering holistic musical education through collaborative endeavors, both nationally and internationally, underscores our dedication to nurturing the artistic growth of our learners. While we prioritise the collaboration with esteemed South African musical luminaries to showcase the exceptional talent inherent within our borders, we equally value the enriching exposure to diverse international musical expertise.
In a recent milestone, we had the distinct privilege of hosting the revered trumpet virtuoso, Professor Dan Newell, renowned for his pivotal roles with prestigious orchestras such as the Royal Opera House, London Symphony Orchestra, and London Philharmonic Orchestra. Dan’s illustrious career, encompassing over 200 Hollywood film, television, and video soundtracks, as well as collaborations with revered international icons, solidifies his status as an eminent figure in the realm of music. His dedicated mentorship during his residency at MSA left an indelible impact on our learners and tutors, inspiring growth and artistic development. We eagerly anticipate Dan’s return to South Africa in August/September 2024, as we continue to benefit from his invaluable guidance and expertise.
The recent partnership with the Orchestre National de Jazz (ONJ) saw three esteemed French musicians engaging in a transformative 10-day workshop in Cape Town. This immersive experience culminated in a captivating showcase at our C-Flat Youth Jazz Festival on March 21, coinciding with Human Rights Day. The collaborative efforts of ONJ and MSA, motivated by a shared commitment to cultural action and the democratisation of music and culture, have fostered an environment that nurtures creativity and musical innovation, leaving a lasting impression on all involved. The ONJ’s admiration for our organisation and expression of interest in returning in 2025 signify the enduring impact of these cross-cultural exchanges.
Furthermore, in 2025, our organisation anticipates hosting the internationally acclaimed German conductor, Wolfgang Diefenbach, known for his role as the artistic director of Landesjugendjazzorchester Hessen. Wolfgang’s visit promises to inspire and challenge our learners, propelling them to new heights in their musical pursuit and artistic expression.
